Ignition types

Matchlock c. 1400 – 1700
The earliest mechanical ignition system. A slow-burning match cord — typically a length of chemically treated hemp — is held in a pivoting clamp called a serpentine. Pulling the trigger lowers the glowing cord into a pan of priming powder. Widely used in infantry muskets across Europe and Asia until replaced by the more reliable flintlock. Identifiable by its distinctive curved serpentine and open priming pan.
Wheellock c. 1510 – 1700
A spring-powered serrated steel wheel that spins against a piece of iron pyrite (fool's gold), producing a shower of sparks to ignite the priming charge. Far more complex and expensive than the matchlock, the wheellock was primarily found in high-quality cavalry pistols, hunting arms, and prestige pieces. The wound wheel allowed the arm to be carried ready to fire — an important military advantage. Germany and the Southern Netherlands were major centres of wheellock production.
Snaplock / Snaphance c. 1540 – 1700
A transitional ignition type between the wheellock and flintlock. A cock holding a flint is snapped forward by a spring to strike a separate steel battery plate, producing sparks over the priming pan. Early Dutch and Scandinavian firearms frequently used the snaphance. The true flintlock combined the battery and pan cover into a single frizzen, superseding this design.
Flintlock c. 1610 – 1860
The dominant European military ignition system for over two centuries. A flint gripped in the jaws of the cock strikes the combined steel frizzen and pan cover; the blow opens the pan and produces sparks simultaneously, igniting the priming powder. Standard issue across all major European armies from approximately 1700. The British Land Pattern (Brown Bess), French Charleville, and Prussian infantry musket all used the flintlock. Identifiable by the distinctive cock, frizzen, and exposed priming pan on the lock plate.
Percussion lock c. 1820 – 1880
Developed by Scottish clergyman Alexander Forsyth around 1807 and refined into the copper cap system by the 1820s. A small copper cap containing fulminate of mercury is placed over a hollow nipple screwed into the barrel breech. The hammer strikes the cap, producing a hot flame that passes through the nipple to ignite the main charge. More reliable than flintlock in wet conditions, with fewer misfires. The Pattern 1853 Enfield and most mid-19th century military arms use this system. Many surviving flintlock arms were later converted to percussion.
Pinfire c. 1835 – 1900
An early self-contained metallic cartridge system developed by Casimir Lefaucheux in the 1830s. A small pin protrudes radially from the cartridge base; when struck by the hammer, it drives into an internal percussion cap. Common in European civilian revolvers and shotguns from 1850–1880. Identifiable by the slot in the chamber mouth through which the pin protrudes, and the characteristic angled loading gate. Largely superseded by centrefire cartridges by the 1880s.
Centerfire / Needlefire c. 1860 – present
Modern cartridge ignition. In centrefire, the primer compound is contained in a small cap in the centre of the cartridge base, struck by the firing pin. The Dreyse needle gun (1841) used an early needlefire system where a long needle penetrated the entire powder charge to strike a primer at its base. Centrefire brass cartridges became the universal standard by the 1870s–1880s and remain so today. The Chassepot, Martini–Henry, and early Winchesters all use centrefire ignition.

Proof marks

Proof mark also: proof stamp, épreuve
An official stamp applied to a firearm barrel after it has been tested at a recognised proof house. The test involves firing an overloaded charge — typically 1.5× the standard service load — to verify structural integrity. Proof marking has been compulsory in Britain since 1637. A firearm sold without valid proof marks is illegal to sell in Britain and most of Europe. Marks typically indicate: proof house, year, bore/calibre, and type of proof.
View mark also: provisional proof
A preliminary inspection mark applied before the barrel is fully assembled. In the British system, the view mark (a V under a crown, or crossed sceptres) confirms the barrel passed initial inspection. Both the view mark and final proof mark should be present on correctly proofed British arms. The absence of a view mark on an otherwise proofed arm can indicate re-sleeving or re-boring.
Crown over V British view mark
The standard provisional proof or view mark applied at both the London and Birmingham Proof Houses. The crowned V confirms the barrel has passed initial dimensional inspection. Found on the barrel flat near the breech, usually accompanied by the definitive proof mark. Present on most British firearms from the late 18th century onwards.
Nitro proof mark post-1875
From the 1870s onwards, proof houses introduced special marks for arms tested with nitrocellulose (smokeless) powder, which generates significantly higher pressures than black powder. A firearm bearing only black powder proof marks must not be used with modern smokeless ammunition. British nitro proof marks include "NP" under a crown. This distinction is critical for safety and valuation.
Bore mark also: gauge mark, calibre stamp
The part of the proof mark that indicates the barrel's internal diameter. In the British system this is expressed as a fraction or gauge number; in continental Europe, in millimetres. The bore mark helps date a firearm — the British system changed from the traditional gauge fractions to metric measurements in 1954. Mismatched bore marks and visible bore diameter may indicate re-boring.

Proof houses

Birmingham Proof House est. 1813 · Birmingham, England
The younger of the two British proof authorities, established by Act of Parliament in 1813 to serve the rapidly growing Birmingham arms trade. Primary marks include BP (Birmingham Proof) under a crown, a crossed sceptres view mark, and an anchor (used on pistol barrels in some periods). The Birmingham trade produced the majority of British sporting arms and trade guns. Most arms manufactured in the West Midlands were proofed here rather than in London.
London Proof House est. 1637 · London, England
The oldest British proof authority, established under Charles I in 1637 and managed by the Worshipful Company of Gunmakers. Primary marks include GP (London Proof, Gunmakers Proof) under a crown, and the crowned V view mark. Military and fine trade arms were often proofed in London. The London house tends to appear on higher-quality pieces and arms made by established London-based gunmakers such as Manton, Purdey, and Holland & Holland.
Banc d'Épreuves de Liège est. 1672 · Liège, Belgium
One of the oldest continuously operating proof houses in the world. The Liège proof mark — an oval containing ELG (Épreuve Liège) with a star — is among the most frequently encountered marks on continental European arms. Liège was the largest arms-producing city in 19th-century Europe, manufacturing enormous quantities of military, sporting, and trade arms for global export. The crowned lion (definitive proof) and star (provisional proof) are also common Liège marks.
Paris Proof House est. 1733 · Paris, France
The French national proof authority, established under royal charter. French proof marks typically include a crowned monogram or letters identifying the mark's period and type. The mark changed multiple times with each change of French government — Ancien Régime, Revolutionary, Napoleonic, Restoration, and subsequent Republic marks are all distinct. French military arms such as the Charleville musket and Pistolet de Marine bear Paris proof marks when of regulation manufacture.
Vienna Proof House est. 1756 · Vienna, Austria
The primary proof authority for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Vienna marks typically include a crowned double-headed eagle or specific letter combinations indicating the proof type and period. Austrian military arms — including the Lorenz rifle — bear Vienna proof. The extensive Habsburg military production means Vienna-proofed arms are commonly found across Central and Eastern Europe.
Suhl Proof House est. 1891 · Suhl, Germany
Located in Thuringia, Suhl was the centre of the German arms trade from the 16th century. The Suhl proof house formalised the longstanding local proofing tradition. Pre-unification German arms from Suhl may carry earlier guild marks rather than an official proof house stamp. After 1871 and the formation of the German Empire, Suhl became one of several official German proof houses, using a crowned Gothic S as its primary mark.

Firearm parts

Lock plate also: lockwork
The metal plate mounted on the left side of the stock that carries the entire ignition mechanism — cock or hammer, frizzen (in flintlocks), mainspring, tumbler, sear, and bridle. The lock plate is the primary location for maker's marks, government inspector stamps, and decorative engraving. The quality and style of lock plate engraving is an important indicator of both origin and date.
Cock / Hammer also: dog (early term)
The pivoting arm that holds the flint (in flintlock arms) or strikes the percussion cap (in percussion arms). The cock in a flintlock has two jaws that clamp the flint with a leather pad. Cock shape is an important dating indicator: early 17th-century cocks have a distinctive comma-shaped profile; later examples became more refined. The half-cock position acts as a safety, preventing accidental discharge.
Frizzen also: steel, battery, hammer (confusingly)
The L-shaped steel component in a flintlock that performs two functions simultaneously: the vertical face provides the steel surface against which the flint strikes to produce sparks, while the horizontal shelf covers the priming pan. When the cock strikes the frizzen, the force both opens the pan cover and generates the sparks needed for ignition. Frizzen shape and quality significantly affect flintlock reliability.
Priming pan also: flash pan
The small depression beside the touch-hole in the barrel that holds a small charge of fine priming powder. In flintlocks, the frizzen covers this pan until the moment of firing. The pan is typically located on the right side of the action. A missing or damaged pan fence (the vertical wall behind the pan) can indicate repair or alteration.
Stock
The wooden body of a firearm that houses and supports the barrel and lock mechanism. Stocks are classified by form: full stock (wood extends the full length of the barrel), half stock (wood ends partway along the barrel), and pistol grip. Stock wood species — typically walnut for quality arms, beech for military use — and the style of carving or cheekpiece can help establish regional origin and period.
Barrel also: tube
The metal tube through which the projectile travels. Key features for identification include: profile (round, octagonal, swamped, or tapered), bore (smooth or rifled), length, and the presence of proof marks and maker's stamps on the barrel flat. Spanish barrels are often distinguishable by their distinctive rib-pattern welded construction; Damascus barrels show characteristic swirling patterns from twisted iron and steel strips.
Ramrod also: rammer, scouring rod
The rod used to push the powder, wad, and ball down the muzzle of a muzzle-loading firearm. Typically stored in a channel beneath the barrel called the ramrod channel or thimbles. Military ramrods are usually iron or steel; civilian and sporting arms often used hardwood or brass-tipped ramrods. Original matching ramrods significantly increase the value of an antique firearm.
Tang
A flat metal extension projecting rearward from the breech of the barrel that is inlet into the top of the stock for added rigidity. The tang screw passes vertically through the tang and the stock to secure barrel to wood. On pistols, the tang often extends down the grip. The tang is frequently engraved and may carry the maker's name or additional proof marks.
Escutcheon also: inlay plate, oval
A decorative metal (typically silver or brass) oval or shield-shaped plate inlet flush into the top of the stock behind the lock. Traditionally intended as a surface for engraving the owner's crest or initials. The style and material of the escutcheon provides dating and quality clues: silver escutcheons are found on quality sporting and duelling pieces; plain brass on military and trade arms.

Historical arms

Brown Bess Land Pattern Musket · c. 1722–1838
The standard British Army flintlock musket, produced in four principal patterns: Long Land (1722), Short Land (1768), India (1793), and New Land (1802). Bore approximately .75 calibre; barrel lengths varied from 39 inches (New Land) to 46 inches (Long Land). The name "Brown Bess" is colloquial — the official designation is simply Land Pattern Musket. Distinguishable by its robust lock (usually marked with the Tower armoury mark or a maker's name and the crown and GR cypher), three ramrod pipes, and distinctive brass furniture.
Charleville Musket Modèle 1763/1766/1777 · France
The standard French infantry flintlock musket, manufactured at the royal armoury at Charleville and other French arsenals. The Model 1777 was the version widely used during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and was also supplied to American forces during the Revolutionary War. Identifiable by its iron furniture (versus the British brass), distinctive lock with a rounded fence, and the French royal or republican proof marks on the barrel. Calibre approximately .69.
Baker Rifle Pattern 1800 Infantry Rifle
The first standard-issue rifle of the British Army, designed by Ezekiel Baker and adopted in 1800. Issued to elite rifle units including the 95th Rifles (the "Green Jackets" of Napoleonic fame). Seven-groove rifling, .615 calibre, 30-inch barrel. Distinguished from the Brown Bess by its shorter, octagonal barrel, brass-hilted sword bayonet (rather than socket bayonet), and the patch box in the stock. Lock typically marked by the manufacturer (Baker, Heylin, Barnett) with crown and GR.
Pattern 1853 Enfield P53 · percussion rifle-musket
The principal British infantry long arm from 1853 through the early years of the breech-loading era. A percussion muzzle-loader with three-groove Enfield rifling, .577 calibre, 39-inch barrel. Used extensively in the Crimean War, Indian Rebellion of 1857, and the American Civil War (by both sides). The Enfield long-range accuracy — effective to 800 yards — was a significant tactical advance over the Brown Bess. Lock typically stamped with crown, VR cypher, ENFIELD, and year of manufacture.
Sea Service Pistol also: Tower pistol, naval pistol
The standard British naval flintlock pistol, issued to Royal Navy officers and marines. Several patterns exist (1733, 1756, 1790, 1801). Identifiable by its belt hook on the left of the stock, heavy construction suited to use as a bludgeon, and typically the absence of a ramrod (sailors carried separate boarding weapons). Lock marked with Tower proof, crown, and GR. Barrel flat carries Birmingham or London proof and bore marks.
Pistolet de Marine French naval pistol
The French equivalent of the Sea Service Pistol; various models from 1733 onwards. Smooth-bore flintlock, .69 calibre, typically with a brass butt cap. Made at the French national arsenals and marked with the relevant arsenal's stamps and French proof marks. Distinguished from the Charleville musket-pattern lock by being in pistol form, and from civilian arms by the absence of elaborate decoration. Commonly found in estate sales across France and former French territories.
Duelling pistol c. 1770 – 1850
A matched pair of single-shot pistols made to the highest possible standard of precision and consistency. Quality duelling pistols typically feature hair triggers, octagonal barrels, saw-handle stocks, and minimal ornamentation (considered ungentlemanly to distract the eye). Leading makers include Wogdon, Manton, Purdey (British) and Boutet (French). Surviving cased pairs in original condition command significant premiums at auction.

Makers & nations

Tower of London Ordnance Office · London
The principal British government armoury and the source of the "Tower" mark found on military arms. Arms marked TOWER on the lock plate were made to government contract and inspected at the Tower of London. The presence of a crowned GR (or VR, AR) cypher confirms the period of manufacture. Tower-marked arms are not from a single maker but represent the broader government contracting system; lock and barrel makers varied.
Liège arms trade Belgium · est. 14th century
Liège in present-day Belgium was the largest centre of civilian firearms production in 19th-century Europe. The Liège proof house mark (ELG in an oval) appears on an enormous range of arms including sporting guns, revolvers, trade pistols, and imitation military arms. Liège makers frequently copied successful English and German designs; a Liège arm can resemble a British or German original. The hallmark of Liège production is often the ELG oval combined with a small star or the crowned lion definitive proof mark.
Manton Joseph & John Manton · London · c. 1780–1835
Brothers Joseph (1766–1835) and John Manton (1752–1834) were among the most celebrated London gunmakers of the flintlock and early percussion era. Joseph Manton in particular is credited with numerous technical innovations including the elevation of rib, platinum-lined touch-holes, and early percussion developments. A genuine signed Manton piece is highly collectible; many inferior arms were falsely signed with the Manton name. Verification via London Proof House records is possible for some pieces.
Spanish arms especially: Eibar and Madrid tradition
Spain has a long arms-making tradition centred on Madrid (royal patronage) and the Basque town of Eibar (trade production). Spanish arms are often identifiable by distinctive barrel construction using alternating iron and steel strips welded in a pattern, visible as fine longitudinal lines, and by the characteristic miquelet lock — a flintlock variant with the mainspring on the exterior of the lock plate. Spanish proof marks often include a crown over letters identifying the period of the monarchy.
German arms Suhl, Munich, Dresden
Germany had multiple important arms-making centres before unification in 1871. Suhl (Thuringia) dominated trade arms production; Munich and Dresden produced high-quality sporting and military arms. Pre-unification German arms may carry guild marks rather than standardised proof house stamps. The Jäger rifle tradition — a short, heavy-stocked hunting rifle — is distinctly German and identifiable by its octagonal barrel, set triggers, and distinctive patch box.

General terms

Calibre / Bore
The internal diameter of the barrel. In the British and American system, calibre is expressed in thousandths of an inch (e.g., .577 Enfield, .75 Brown Bess). In Europe, millimetres are standard. The older British gauge system expresses bore as the number of spherical lead balls of that diameter that together weigh one pound — a 12-bore takes 12 balls to the pound. Proof marks typically include the bore measurement to allow matching of ammunition.
Damascus barrel also: twist barrel, laminated barrel
A barrel forged by twisting and welding together iron and steel strips around a mandrel, then grinding and polishing to reveal the characteristic swirling or watered pattern. Common in higher-quality sporting arms from approximately 1750 to 1900. Damascus barrels are significantly weaker than modern mono-steel barrels and must never be fired with smokeless (nitro) powder — only black powder loads. The visible pattern is not merely decorative; it reveals the forging method.
Conversion
A firearm altered from one ignition type to another — most commonly flintlock to percussion (the most frequent 19th-century conversion) or, occasionally, matchlock to flintlock. Converted arms typically show evidence of modification: a percussion drum and nipple fitted to the original flintlock barrel, an altered or replaced cock, and in some cases a replaced lock plate. Reproduction / Replica
A modern copy of a historical firearm. Quality ranges from high-grade reproductions (Italian Uberti and Pedersoli are the best-known makers) to crude decorative wall-hangers. Key indicators of modern reproduction include: proof marks dated after 1900, Italian EIP (Eibar proof) marks, anachronistic screw types (Phillips head), laser-cut parts, and wood that has been artificially aged. Modern Italian reproductions are legally required to bear Italian proof marks. Stempel's authenticity assessment specifically flags these indicators.
Rifling
Helical grooves cut into the interior of a barrel that impart spin to the projectile, dramatically improving accuracy at range. Smooth-bore arms — most military muskets before 1850 — have no rifling and rely on short range and volume of fire. Rifle arms, identifiable by the spiral groove pattern visible when looking down the muzzle, were used by elite light infantry and hunters. The number of grooves and twist rate are characteristic of different national and period traditions.
Flats
The flat surfaces of an octagonal barrel, or the flat machined surfaces on a round barrel near the breech where proof marks and maker's stamps are applied. Proof marks are almost always found on the barrel flats, typically within 8 inches of the breech. Examining the barrel flats is the first step in identifying proof marks; the area should be photographed with raking light to reveal worn or shallow stamps.
Antique firearm (legal definition)
In the United Kingdom, a firearm manufactured before 1 January 1900 using an obsolete calibre (as listed in Schedule 1 of the Antique Firearms Regulations 2021) is legally classified as an antique and may be possessed without a firearms certificate. In the United States, under the Gun Control Act, any firearm manufactured before 1 January 1899 (or using fixed ammunition of a no-longer-manufactured type) is classified as an antique. Legal definitions vary significantly by jurisdiction — always verify local law.
